Revealing True Colours

Updated: Oct 19, 2019

Just like rocks and dandelions, children love to collect Fall leaves. As the first leaves reveal their true colours hidden by Summer's dose of chlorophyll, students begin to collect them and bring them inside after recess. Their bright colours make beautiful bouquets which children proudly share with us.

This need to collect provides an opportunity to learn the names of the different trees on the school yard. Using field guides of common leaves found in your area is essential. A field guide from the University of Guelph Arboretum has a great selection of trees commonly found in Ontario in addition to another couple dozens field guides. You can purchase their Biodiversity Identification Sheets online for $5 each.
